The NGV Architecture Commission - Temple of Boom

I’ve recently had the immense pleasure of working alongside the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) team to produce this year’s Architecture Commission.

The Architecture Commission

Each year the NGV invite Australian architects and designers to submit a design idea for presentation within the Grollo Equiset Garden at NGV International. It’s an opportunity for their work to be seen on a global stage, and to create a thought provoking installation to encourage dialogue, interaction and community engagement.

Temple of Boom

This year’s commission was designed by architects Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang. Described as an “evocative reimagining of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens”, it is a commanding structure brought to life by Savio Projects, AUGRC, Ceres Fair Wood and Just Another Agency.

It is the dream of many (myself included!) to work at the NGV, and the collective team relished the opportunity to bring this scheme to life. It take months of dedicated planning and expertise to create a structure of this scale - from weight loadings, construction schedules, supply chain and material shortages, not to mention one of the wettest October’s on record! It takes a large team to bring these installations to life, all working with a common goal.

These stunning photos show the complexity of the design, build and painted finishes by some of Melbourne’s renowned street artists with more to come over the summer months. Currently shown is work by Manda Lane, David Lee Pereira and Drez.
