The Discovery Call - Part 2
Last time we looked at what the “discovery call” is and what to expect when you speak to an interior designer.
A discovery call is an essential step in finding the perfect fit for your project. This time we’re going to look at things from the client’s perspective and how this call can help you make an informed decision about who you will work with.
A discovery call isn’t just about the designer learning about your project, it’s also the perfect opportunity to ask questions of the designer.
Questions to Ask During a Discovery Call
Here are some key questions to ask during a discovery call to help you understand the designer's experience, process, and approach:
Can you tell me about your design process and how you approach a new project?
What is your experience working on projects similar to mine?
How do you handle revisions and changes to the design during the project?
Can you provide references or portfolio examples for me to review?
How do you communicate with clients during a project, and how often can I expect updates?
What is your availability for starting and completing this project?
How do you ensure that the finished product aligns with my vision and meets my needs and expectations?
By asking these questions, you can get a better understanding of the designer's working style, experience, and availability, and determine if they are a good match for your project.
The Benefits of a Discovery Call
Let’s have a look at how the information you gather on this call can help you find the right interior designer for your project.
Establishing a Connection with the Designer and Understanding Their Process
A discovery call is an opportunity to get to know the designer and establish a connection. By asking questions and understanding their approach, you can determine if they are the right fit for your project. This includes how they approach various projects and an understanding of their working style - analyse whether you have a similar style in your professional life because you’re going to spend a long time working together and communication is key!
Assessing Experience
By asking about the designer's experience and reviewing their portfolio, you can determine if they have the skills and expertise to handle your project. Now, this can come with its own nuances. There are many designers who may be just starting out or launching their own business after many years working for others. Add to that, there are times when client’s do not wish for their property to be photographed - so bear in mind not everyone will have a dazzling portfolio. This is one part of deciding who is the best fit for you, but in my opinion approach, attitude and vision are just as important as the portfolio.
Clarifying Communication and Expectations
This is the best time to clarify communication and expectations with the designer. By understanding how they communicate and how often you can expect updates, you can ensure that the project runs smoothly. It’s equally important to understand or set boundaries around communication - for example, do you expect the designer to be available out of hours? Remember this person is running a business and will likely have other commitments. What is the preferred method of communication? Most designers will prefer email and phone, rather than messaging or Whatsapp, so now is the time to work out how you will effectively communicate.
Ready for Your Discovery Call?
Hopefully you’re now feeling equipped to get the most of the discovery call - both knowing what questions a designer will be asking you, and conversely, the type of questions you might like to prepare for the designer. By asking the right questions and understanding their process and approach, you can make an informed decision and find a designer who can bring your vision to life.
